Casement Windows
Applewood Joinery can produce various types of casement windows with a traditional window hung on butt hinges with the casement finishing flush with the frame externally. This type of window would generally require casement stays and fasteners which would traditionally have a black monkey tail design. However we can still produce this type of window with friction stays and an espagnolette locking system.
These stylish windows deliver the most unobstructed viewing areas, structural integrity and ventilation of any operating window. Each one is hinged so the sash opens outward, to the right or left, in a swinging motion. We also offer French casement windows, which feature two sashes that open outward without a centre mullion and provide a clear opening; casement push out windows that operate simply with friction hinges and have an especially clean look.
Other types of windows we produce: -
Bay Window
A bay window is a window space projecting outward from the main walls of a building and forming a bay in a room, either square or polygonal in plan. The angles most commonly used on the inside corners of the bay are 90, 135 and 150 degrees. Bay windows are often associated with Victorian architecture. They first achieved widespread popularity in the 1870s.
The windows are commonly used to provide the illusion of a larger room. They are used to increase the flow of natural light into a building as well as provide views of the outside that would be unavailable with an ordinary window.
Bow Window
As above but curved on plan
Rose Window
In Gothic architecture, a circular window frequently placed over one of the large doors. It is usually filled with elaborate tracery on a centralized pattern, in early examples arranged like the spokes of a wheel.
Oriel Window
Projecting or bay window in an upper storey supported on brackets, corbels, or an engaged column, usually polygonal or curved in plan. It is most characteristic of the late medieval and early Renaissance period in England, where it was a favourite feature in civic and domestic buildings, but it is also found in France and Germany during the same period. The term is often loosely but incorrectly applied to any bay window.
Porthole Window
A circular window on elevation.
Bespoke Window
To match existing or as architects drawings.
Traditional Vertical Sliding Sash Windows
An Applewood Joinery vertical sliding sash window is produced with our customer in mind to match the existing window as near as possible but to still include double glazing and traditional looks when required.
The traditional box sash would have been produced with mortice and tenon joints, single glazed and fixed in with putty. They would be hung on sash cords with pulleys and counterbalance weights. Generally the outside sliding sash would have incorporated sash horns.
We are still able to produce this traditional style of window with additional draught strip and double glazing making this type of window environmentally friendly and also to help keep your heating bills down.
Modern Vertical Sliding Sash Windows
An Applewood Joinery modern vertical sliding sash window is the alternative design to the traditional sliding sash window. The frame section would be much slimmer than the box section incorporating spiral balances instead of the more traditional weights and pulleys.
Slim line bars are also an option to consider when designing your windows.
This window would include additional draught strip and double glazing making this type of window environmentally friendly and also to help keep your heating bills down.
Double Glazing
Our standard window double glazed units are 24mm built up internally with a 4mm Pilkington 'K' coated pane using a 16mm air cavity with a glazing bar in a selected colour and a 4mm external pane. This currently conforms to FENSA regulations.
The glass is toughened or laminated where required.
Glass specification can be improved by filling the air cavity with argon or krypton gas. Also there are various other types of glass such as anti-sun and solar control which improve the specification further still.
Available now is Pilkington 'Activ' glass which is proven to be the first self cleaning glass.
