Shop Fronts

Traditional shopfronts are based on classical proportions which provide a functional yet balanced form. The elements of a traditional shopfront should be included in a new shopfront design, particularly on historic buildings. In most situations, timber is the appropriate material for shopfronts on historic buildings.

The main components of a traditional shop front are as follows: -
Cornice, Transom, Fascia, Mullion, Blindbox, Pilaster, Corbel, Stallriser, Fanlight and Panelled door.

Fascias
Fascias should be of an appropriate scale for the building. All too often, the vertical rhythm of old buildings is ignored and the character of the streetscape is lost. Where More than one unit, regard should be had to the individual character of each building. A single shop occupies.

Fascias should not obscure any features and should not dominate the elevation of the building. A narrow, timber fascia is more appropriate than a plastic box fascia.

Stallrisers
Stallrisers help to form an integral part of the building frontage and provide protection from the weather and dirt. The height of the stallriser will generally be determined by the nature of the merchandise and should be of natural materials such as timber, stone or brick.

Doorways
A recessed doorway is an important element of the traditional shopfront, providing interest and shelter in the street. Where the entrance is not at street level, provision must be made for people with disabilities.

Windows
Large expanses of glass are generally inappropriate, particularly on smaller traditional shopfronts, and result in a horizontal emphasis in the streetscape. Glazing bars can be used to sub-divide the window to provide a more interesting display.

Shop Fitting

We provide a shop fitting service to supply and fit bespoke joinery such as made to measure counters, reception desks and built in cupboards, drawers and shelving units.
